North Carolina

Baltimore, MD; April 19, 2018 - Clinicians for Progressive Care is excited to announce our endorsement of Martha Shafer for North Carolina House District 62. Martha has spent her career working in non-profit health care and understands how corporate greed and the headlong race for profit hurt vulnerable residents of the Tar Heel State.

Martha received her bachelor's degree from Furman University and a master's in health administration at Duke. As a vice president of the Women's Hospital of Greensboro, she worked to fund mammograms for poor women. As a parent and school volunteer, she gained insight into the problems created by underfunding public schools.

After seeing the effect of improved access to Medicaid services on previously uninsured patients, she came to her passionate commitment to universal health care. She knows how poverty, hunger, and unstable housing harm families and children, especially the sick and chronically ill, and will work tirelessly to address these gaping inequalities while in the North Carolina legislature. Moreover, Martha supports women's health without qualification. She will fight to ensure access to reproductive healthcare, and will refuse to support centers preying upon women by misleading them with baseless falsehoods.

Martha Shafer is a candidate with the training, knowledge, commitment, and courage to make a difference for North Carolinians -- and C4PC is honored to endorse her.

Baltimore, MD; February 21, 2018 -  Clinicians for Progressive Care is pleased to announce its endorsement of Dr. Kyle Horton for Congress in North Carolina’s 7th District. Dr. Horton has seen first hand how the American dream is on life support in North Carolina, and is ready to help fix our broken system. Dr. Horton will work towards universal health care, good jobs, supportive public schools, a clean environment, and our nation’s safety at home while defending its interests abroad. Donate to Dr. Horton.

Dr. Horton attended the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, then went to medical school at Wright State University in Ohio, where she also earned an MBA. She worked at the VA in Richmond, Virginia, where she fought for the improvement of suicide prevention for veterans.

Dr. Horton wants to make sure everyone can afford top-notch health care and not go bankrupt buying their medications. While serving the people of Eastern North Carolina as a primary care physician, she's seen first-hand what's broken. Dr. Horton will fight to expand Medicare coverage to all Americans, rein in prescription drug prices, and strengthen Medicare and Medicaid.

She knows our system disadvantages African-Americans and people of color, and wants to target resources to those communities. Her comprehensive plan to reduce the harms of opiate use and overdose includes treatment for substance use disorder, motivating appropriate prescription by clinicians, and a comprehensive approach to pain. Of course, she supports reproductive care and the repeal of unjust restrictions on abortion.

Dr. Horton will bring her expertise as a physician to serve our nation, helping heal our fractured health care, economy, and environment, for all the residents of North Carolina.
