C4PC ENDORSES SHELDON H. LASKIN FOR MARYLAND STATE SENATE, DISTRICT 11

Clinicians for Progressive Care is very happy to endorse the progressive choice for Maryland State Senate District 11, Sheldon H. Laskin. Sheldon is a seasoned attorney and political activist who has been fighting for justice in Maryland for decades, and will be a state senator Baltimore County can finally be proud of. DONATE TO SHELDON LASKIN.

An experienced tax attorney and former Assistant Attorney General, Sheldon has made his reputation defending the vulnerable. He argued employment discrimination cases for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and successfully argued a case before the United States Supreme Court.

As an activist in his community, he has put his legal expertise to use in fighting for human rights for all, testifying before the Baltimore County Council against the 287(g) program, which authorizes federal authorities to deputize local officials in enforcing immigration policy. He was in favor of the Home Act, which would have prohibited discrimination on the part of landlords against tenants who receive federal income assistance.

Sheldon is also an advocate for universal care. Supporting a single payer system, he is knowledgeable about the barriers which must be surmounted in reaching that goal. He is explicit in connecting the problems of our health care system to present-day racism, and believes that taking steps to increase the number of African American health professional trainees (including scholarships) can help redress this moral wrong.

Sheldon is running against Bobby Zirkin, widely known as an opponent to justice reform in Maryland and infamous as the nation’s second leading recipient of campaign funds from the bail bonds industry. Zirkin is #NotWirkin, and Sheldon can bring justice back to Annapolis.

C4PC ENDORSES LAURA MOSER FOR CONGRESS IN TX-07

Baltimore, MD; May 9, 2018 - Clinicians for Progressive Care is excited to announce our endorsement of Laura Moser for Texas’ Seventh Congressional District. As a journalist and political activist, Laura will fight for progressive values in health care, education, and workers rights, and against the rising tide of racism and bigotry.

Laura was born and raised in Southside Place, TX. She graduated from Amherst College and worked as an editor and national journalist for periodicals including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. After the 2016 election, she founded Daily Action, a text-messaging service that empowers citizens to demand change in Washington.

Laura supports single payer and universal insurance coverage; she will begin by offering a strong public option, lowering eligibility for Medicare to 55 years and expanding eligibility for Medicaid. She wants to decrease burdens of racial inequality by strengthening unions that offer health benefits, job stability and fair wages.

Laura understands that people suffering from substance use disorders need treatment, not moralizing rhetoric. She plans to improve health care for women by increasing access to contraceptives and safe abortions.

While universal care and reproductive health rights are risky stances in some quarters, Laura Moser is not the one to hold back from a fight for progressive beliefs. She is on the side of ordinary Texans and will be their unafraid advocate in Congress.

C4PC ENDORSES ALLISON RUSSO, DrPH, FOR OHIO STATE HOUSE, DISTRICT 24

Baltimore, MD; May 1, 2018 - Clinicians for Progressive Care enthusiastically endorses Allison Russo, DrPH, for Ohio House District 24. A public health expert, business executive, military spouse, and community activist, Allison is the knowledgeable, detail-oriented, progressive voice needed for Central Ohio and the Columbus area.

Allison believes in universal health care, and wants to use the power of negotiation and price controls to make medications affordable for those who need them. She knows that we have to address racism and inequality in society to bring the benefits of health to all. Among other things, that means focusing on funding public education, improving housing, and addressing economic inequality.

Allison also believes in a woman’s right to choose and a full spectrum of reproductive health care. She will fight to roll back the restrictions on women’s health, among the most callous in the nation, that the Ohio State House has instituted in its uncompromising opposition to abortion. She will set about dismantling the carceral system that unjustly imprisons so many African-Americans; and decriminalizing recreational drugs.

Ohio’s opiate epidemic has devastated the state, with its overdose rate second worse in the nation. Allison understands we must provide effective treatment to those with substance use disorder, as well as long-term solutions providing greater economic opportunity for poor communities.

Allison knows the theory and practice of public health, the nuts-and-bolts of running effective organizations, and the ways in which our system as currently constructed denies equal health to so many. C4PC knows that Allison Russo will make things better for Ohioans and looks forward to her victory in November.

C4PC ENDORSES PARISIMA TAEB, MD, IN THE FLORIDA HOUSE, DISTRICT 78

Baltimore, MD; April 26, 2018 - Clinicians for Progressive Care enthusiastically endorses Dr. Parisima Taeb for Florida State Representative, District 78. An obesity medicine physician and immigrant to the US, Dr. Taeb has stepped forward to bring her expertise, activism, and vision to bear on the challenges facing Southwest Florida. She believes in clean water, well funded mental health, freely available treatment for those with substance use disorders, and universal health care through Medicaid expansion. DONATE TO DR. TAEB.

Dr. Taeb came to the US from Iran as a child. She attended the University of Florida and received her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine, completing residency at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and thereafter working as a hospitalist in southwest Florida.  She currently operates her own practice in Fort Myers, and provides affordable treatment on a sliding scale.

After the recent hurricanes that devastated the Carribean, including our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico, Dr. Taeb spearheaded a local effort to provide relief to victims of the tragedy. She is active in leadership roles in her profession and community, in addition to being a proud, involved parent, a product of Florida’s public schools, and an alumna of Stoneman Douglas High School -- inspired by that school’s activist history in the wake of trauma.

The incumbent, Heather Fitzenhagen, has not advanced the interests of southwest Florida in her 6 years in office. Her uninspiring legislative proposals included a measure to reaffirm the Second Amendment. Dr. Taeb is ready to bring a new voice and vision to Tallahasee, building a safer and stronger community through empowerment and education.

C4PC ENDORSES MARTHA SHAFER FOR NC HOUSE DISTRICT 62

Baltimore, MD; April 19, 2018 - Clinicians for Progressive Care is excited to announce our endorsement of Martha Shafer for North Carolina House District 62. Martha has spent her career working in non-profit health care and understands how corporate greed and the headlong race for profit hurt vulnerable residents of the Tar Heel State.

Martha received her bachelor's degree from Furman University and a master's in health administration at Duke. As a vice president of the Women's Hospital of Greensboro, she worked to fund mammograms for poor women. As a parent and school volunteer, she gained insight into the problems created by underfunding public schools.

After seeing the effect of improved access to Medicaid services on previously uninsured patients, she came to her passionate commitment to universal health care. She knows how poverty, hunger, and unstable housing harm families and children, especially the sick and chronically ill, and will work tirelessly to address these gaping inequalities while in the North Carolina legislature. Moreover, Martha supports women's health without qualification. She will fight to ensure access to reproductive healthcare, and will refuse to support centers preying upon women by misleading them with baseless falsehoods.

Martha Shafer is a candidate with the training, knowledge, commitment, and courage to make a difference for North Carolinians -- and C4PC is honored to endorse her.

Baltimore, MD; March 26, 2018 -  Clinicians for Progressive Care is excited to endorse Mai Khanh Tran, MD, for California’s 39th Congressional district. Dr. Tran’s experience as a pediatrician on the frontlines of community healthcare and her passion for helping children and families make her a powerful force for Southern California.

A survivor of breast cancer twice over, Dr. Tran understands the patient experience and the importance of insurance. Dr. Tran knows that health care is a human right. That’s why she’s running as a real progressive.

Dr. Tran was born in Vietnam and came to the United States as a refugee in 1975. She finished college at Harvard, where she supported herself as a janitor while taking classes. She went to medical school at Dartmouth and Brown, completing training in pediatrics at UCLA. She currently treats the children of Orange County.

Dr. Tran wants to reinstate ACA protections for low income individuals. She’ll fight to expand community health centers and for medical outreach in under resourced areas, particularly those most harmed by segregation. Dr. Tran supports stricter regulations that prohibit unfair (“overnight”) spikes in drug prices. She is a strong advocate for women’s healthcare and would seek to repeal laws that prohibit use of federal funding for abortion and contraceptive education in international development work.

Dr. Tran also wants to reduce gun violence with greater checks and increased research, reform immigration laws and improve access to quality K-12 and higher education for all Americans. Mai Khanh Tran is the best choice to represent Southen California in Congress.

C4PC ENDORSES DR. KYLE HORTON, MD, FOR CONGRESS IN NC-7

Baltimore, MD; February 21, 2018 -  Clinicians for Progressive Care is pleased to announce its endorsement of Dr. Kyle Horton for Congress in North Carolina’s 7th District. Dr. Horton has seen first hand how the American dream is on life support in North Carolina, and is ready to help fix our broken system. Dr. Horton will work towards universal health care, good jobs, supportive public schools, a clean environment, and our nation’s safety at home while defending its interests abroad. Donate to Dr. Horton.

Dr. Horton attended the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, then went to medical school at Wright State University in Ohio, where she also earned an MBA. She worked at the VA in Richmond, Virginia, where she fought for the improvement of suicide prevention for veterans.

Dr. Horton wants to make sure everyone can afford top-notch health care and not go bankrupt buying their medications. While serving the people of Eastern North Carolina as a primary care physician, she's seen first-hand what's broken. Dr. Horton will fight to expand Medicare coverage to all Americans, rein in prescription drug prices, and strengthen Medicare and Medicaid.

She knows our system disadvantages African-Americans and people of color, and wants to target resources to those communities. Her comprehensive plan to reduce the harms of opiate use and overdose includes treatment for substance use disorder, motivating appropriate prescription by clinicians, and a comprehensive approach to pain. Of course, she supports reproductive care and the repeal of unjust restrictions on abortion.

Dr. Horton will bring her expertise as a physician to serve our nation, helping heal our fractured health care, economy, and environment, for all the residents of North Carolina.

C4PC ENDORSES NILESH KALYANARAMAN, MD, FOR DELEGATE TO MARYLAND ASSEMBLY (43RD DISTRICT)

Baltimore, MD (February 14, 2018) -- Clinicians for Progressive Care is proud to announce its endorsement of Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman, MD, for Delegate in the Maryland Assembly, representing District 43 (North Baltimore). Dr. Nilesh has dedicated his professional life as a physician to treating the underserved, and will continue to advocate in Annapolis for all his constituents, especially the disadvantaged and vulnerable. DONATE to Dr. Nilesh.

Dr. Nilesh went to medical school at SUNY Brooklyn School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta. He went on to care for imprisoned and homeless patients in Baltimore.

Dr. Nilesh is chief health officer at a community health center in Baltimore where he has strengthened programs to help those with pain and substance use problems. When Maryland expanded Medicaid coverage as part of the Affordable Care Act, he saw the positive impact on the lives of his patients. Medicaid gave ordinary people access to necessary health care that was previously unaffordable. Dr. Nilesh will work to expand coverage to all Marylanders, eliminate the 20 year gap in life expectancies across Baltimore neighborhoods, and reduce costs of prescription medicines.

In addition to health care reform, Dr. Nilesh seeks to ensure affordable housing by reforming rent court, expanding eviction prevention services and reinvesting in poor communities. He wants to strengthen public schools and job training programs that will help families adapt to the changing economy. He recognizes the segregation and racism that are a part of African Americans’ daily life.

Dr. Nilesh will be a force for good in the Maryland Assembly, and C4PC is excited to support him.

Dr. Hashimi will also fight for women in the workplace, including equal pay for equal work, reproductive health care and family planning.

Dr. Hashimi wants America to be respected, not resented abroad, and for us to care for the underprivileged at home. We can be a caring and prosperous Maryland and America with her training and vision. C4PC looks forward to helping Dr. Hashimi win the primary and represent MD-6 in Congress.

C4PC ENDORSES ROB DAVIDSON, MD, FOR CONGRESS IN MICHIGAN'S 2ND DISTRICT

Baltimore, MD; January 17, 2018 -  Clinicians for Progressive Care endorses Dr. Rob Davidson, MD, for Congress in Michigan’s 2nd District. Dr. Davidson is an Emergency Medicine physician and school board member, not a career politician. His experience improving the lives of his patients has led him to a broader calling: the fight for health, prosperity, and equality for constituents in West Michigan. DONATE TO ROB DAVIDSON.

It is obvious that Rob is the perfect opponent to take on the avid Trump supporter and Republican incumbent Bill Huizenga. Huizenga has voted with Trump 97% of the time, spending his time in Washington, DC, attacking immigrants and the poor, voting to destroy insurance and give away Michiganers' hard-earned money in tax cuts for the very rich.

Dr. Davidson is a native son of Michigan. He graduated from Kalamazoo College and went on to medical school at Michigan State University. He left Michigan to complete residency in Emergency Medicine in Portland, Maine before returning to Ottawa County, where he lives with his wife and three children.

We at C4PC are impressed by Dr. Davidson’s commitment to investing in and partnering with underserved communities to reduce racial disparities. As an active member of his school board, Dr. Davidson understands the necessity of quality public education for all children, regardless of where they live, and increasing access to college and continuing education programs.

Dr. Davidson understands the cost of failing to provide broad-based, equitable, effective access to mental health and substance use treatment. In his emergency room he has seen first-hand, and  helped to treat, the devastation visited on individuals and families by gun violence and is determined to reform the status quo.

As a healer, reformer, policy expert, and concerned citizen, Dr. Davidson is the right choice for West Michigan in Congress.

Baltimore, MD; January 2, 2018 - Clinicians for Progressive Care has the honor of endorsing Dr. Hiral Tipirneni for Congress in Arizona’s 8th District. Dr. Tipirneni is a physician, researcher, community leader, and activist, a woman of knowledge, accomplishment, and compassion. She moved to Phoenix with her husband where she has practiced emergency medicine for over 20 years while also leading a team of cancer researchers, serving on multiple local nonprofit boards, and raising her three children.

Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, C4PC’s Treasurer, says, “As Arizona’s 8th seeks to fill its Congressional seat in a special election, Dr. Tipirneni has the right combination of personal grit, intellectual power, and outsider vision that will bring common-sense kindness back to Washington for the people of the Grand Canyon State.”

Arizonans will benefit from Dr. Tipirneni’s progressive stance on health care including her commitment to universal care through Medicare expansion and reducing barriers to care faced by women, people of color and LGBT individuals. To contain the exorbitant costs of health care, Dr. Tipirneni supports price controls, competition and increased transparency.

Dr. Tipirneni wants an Arizona (and an America) that works for all, with better public schools, a secure Social Security and Medicare, government accountability, and access to child care. In short, she is the right Arizonan to represent the 8th District.

Family doctor, small-business owner, working mother. Good for Texas and the nation. A true progressive, not an opportunist.

Baltimore, MD (December 15, 2017) -- Clinicians for Progressive Care   announces its endorsement of Christine Eady Mann, DO, for Congress in Texas’ 31st District. Dr. Mann has been a family doctor in central Texas for nearly 20 years and understands what strengthening the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Medicaid -- on the way to universal coverage -- will do for Texans. As a physician, small-business owner, and working mother, Dr. Mann will restore common sense humanity to Congress. DONATE TO CHRISTINE MANN.

Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, the Treasurer of C4PC, says, “Dr. Christine Mann possesses an exciting combination of health expertise, the knowledge of what’s needed to make the Texas economy grow, and first-hand experience with the challenges of raising (and healing) children in Trump’s America. Unlike others in the primary, she is a true progressive, the right candidate to defeat the Trumpist incumbent John Carter. Carter has voted with Trump 96% of the time, and has spent his 16 years in Congress attempting to limit women’s reproductive health care, blaming immigrants, and trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He’s even voted for the GOP's Tax bill – which will make it harder for working class families to get by while increasing the deficit by over a trillion dollars."

Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, the Treasurer of C4PC, says, “Republican incumbent John Culbertson has distinguished himself as a slavish Trumper, voting with him 98% of the time and sharing his hostility to immigrants, affordable healthcare, and women’s reproductive rights. On the other hand, Dr. Westin is poised to bring his experience as an oncologist, researcher, and policy advocate to Congress. A new broom sweeps clean, and a great doctor can diagnose and treat what ails the body politic.”

Dr. Westin is a well known MD Anderson faculty member whose laboratory investigates cancer treatments based on the immune system. He has become an ever more prominent voice among healthcare professionals fighting for what’s right: affordable, compassionate, dignified treatment for all Americans. As Dr. Westin says, he is the right man for the right district. Culbertson’s colors are showing more and more clearly, marking him as an unsteady, unstable Washington insider. Let’s send Dr. Westin to clean up Congress with the white coat of truth.

C4PC ENDORSES JOHN DUNCAN FOR CONGRESS IN TX-6

For Immediate Release

Baltimore, MD (November 15, 2017) -- Clinicians for Progressive Care announces its endorsement of John W. Duncan for Congress in Texas’ 6th District. John knows first-hand how important access to high-quality, affordable healthcare is to millions of Americans. While working to provide healthcare to Texans living with HIV/AIDS John realized the urgency of concrete steps to ensure good health for everyone. DONATE TO JOHN W. DUNCAN.

Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, the Treasurer of C4PC, says, “John Duncan is an exciting voice for the underserved, with practical, real-world experience in management, healthcare, and law. He is the right candidate to defeat the long-term, Trumpist incumbent Joe Barton, who has spent his time in Congress attempting to limit women’s reproductive health care, scapegoating immigrants, and trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act.”

Besides his advocacy for universal care through single payer, John Duncan supports evidence-backed treatment for substance use disorders rather than the failed system of imprisonment. He believes in the rights of the disabled to live in the community instead of institutions, understands the role of white supremacy in health disparities, and knows that transgender care matters to all of us. We look forward to supporting John to flip TX-6.

BobSolomon_facebook.png

Baltimore, MD; October 18, 2017 -- Clinicians for Progressive Care is very pleased to announce its endorsement of Dr. Robert C. Solomon, MD, FACEP, for the 18th Congressional District in Pennsylvania. An emergency medicine physician, Bob is running for office to bring evidence-based compassion to Washington, DC. Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, treasurer of C4PC, says, "Bob Solomon is an expert emergency medicine doc who speaks his mind for the benefit of the sick and vulnerable. Supporting him means implementing the policies and values that we strive for as physicians, clinicians, and Americans."

While Dr. Solomon presents a full range of his policy views on his website, C4PC is particularly taken by his robust vision for healthcare system change. Bob wants Medicare for All; an end to the "war on drugs" and the jail-industrial complex which is state aggression against black men; and real negotiation on the part of the Federal government for affordable pharmaceuticals.

Bob will be a special guest of C4PC in Washington, DC (site of this year's American College of Emergency Physician's meeting) at Capitol City Brewing Company, on October 30th at 5pm. Please visit the event on Facebook for more details.
